Day 8, Monday, May 4: Birdlip to Painswick

Today was a 7 to 8 mile walk in a light British rain from Birdlip to Painswick. Rory served as the sherpa service again today transporting our bags from the Royal George Hotel to St. Anne's B&B. Yvonne walked with us today. Unfortunately she has to go back to work tomorrow so we're now on our own.

Once again today we walked through beautiful woodlands and got some great views of vast landscapes. I am so glad that we decided to do this walk in the spring because we have seen every shade of green possible with the new life returning to the plants, trees, and vegetation.

We passed Cooper's Hill today. There is an annual cheese-rolling festival down the very steep hill. Contestants in the festival plunge from a maypole at the top of the hill down the slope in pursuit of a mock cheese. The winner takes home a real 7 lb cheese round as the prize. Rory and Yvonne told us that ambulances park just off of the finish line to take hurt contestants to the hospital. When we saw how steep the slope is we couldn't believe that people would actually roll down the hill. Crazy people will do crazy things.

Part of the walk today was through the Painswick golf course. I was amazed at some of the fairways. There are steep hills that do not allow you to see the green. On this hole you hit the golf ball up over the hill right onto the green on the other side. This course is part of an ancient Iron Age fortress.

We're spending tonight at St. Anne's B&B in Painswick. We've had another great meal and ready to rest in preparation for another beautiful day ahead.
