Day 5, Friday, May 1, Winchcombe to Cleeve Hill

What a beautiful day it has been today! We only needed to walk 6 1/2 miles today so we sort of slept in a bit. Today's hike took us up a couple of big hills but the highest altitude we have reached in our 3 days of hiking has only been 1,716 ft. Part of the Cotswold Way today was a new section that was recently done. There were some beautiful wooded areas along this new part of the Cotswold way---and we saw this little "watering hole" in a horse pasture. The wind was blowing pretty hard at the top of the hills. No accidents today. Yay!

On the outskirts of the town of Winchcombe is located Sudeley Castle. We visited the castle last year when we traveled through this area. It was the home of Henry VIII's last wife, Catherine Parr. There is a wonderful museum inside with clothing and items pertaining to all of his wives. We had many different views of the castle and of Winchcombe until we went over Cleeve Hill. Just 10 min. from the Country Club (the golf course is on top of Cleeve Hill and there are sheep grazing there too!) was our next lodging...Cleeve Hill Hotel, with wonderful views of Cheltenham.

Along our hike on the Cotswold Way today was an ancient burial ground called Belas Knap. It was used by the Saxons and contains several burial chambers. There are many Saxon burial sites throughout England. It is always amazing to think that there are ruins around that are so very old. It dates back to about 3,000 BC. OK, Grandchildren, here is a Book of Mormon question for you. Who led a group of people from the Tower of Babel to the Americas around this time? (2,000 BC)

We haven't seen any "wild" animals on our walk so far...so these are as wild as they come. We walked through a working farm with lots of different cows. I asked them to say "moo" while I took their photo. We saw a lot of brand new lambs on this same farm. They weren't interested in us....just in their mothers and in getting fed. I thought we would have seen more chickens along the way, but we haven't. We saw these chickens in front of the Cleeve Hill Golf and Country Club! I'm not quite sure what this bird is on the right. I kept calling it a "pea hen." Does anyone know what it really is? It was also in front of the Country Club and it squawking at us! We stopped at the Country to take a small rest and get some scones and hot chocolate. It was great!
